In small towns all across America after WW II children shared bedrooms with siblings. Whole families shared one bathroom. Some families had a car. If dad drove off in it every morning he would take mom and the family to the stores on Saturday. In northern towns where there were commuter trains into the city, women, still in their robes and slippers, took husbands to the station to catch the 6:45. Dads on trains and buses had time for the paper and easy beef stew even read books.

It was an afternoon late fall when we visited the Bull & Castle, so the restaurant was quiet and a welcome relief from the bustle of tourists outside of Christchurch. However, I have a feeling that the Bull & Castle gets overly crowded during peak tourist season. Both of us enjoyed our meals very much. The lunch menu is pretty diverse, offering burgers, quesadillas, Irish simple slow cooker casserole, fish and chips, soups, salads, and a rotating menu of daily specials. For dessert, my dining companion and I split a deep-fried Mars bar with ice cream and raspberry coulis. It was heavy, overly sweet, and precisely what we were expecting.
Now they come with automatic controls and even timers to help them do their cooking more effectively. Many cookbooks have even been written chocked full of meal recipes specifically for the cookers of today.
Opening the front door on a cold evening evening and being greeted by the inviting smells of a beef stew or chicken noodle easy beef stew over noodles wafting from a slow cooker - ahhh - it is truly a diner's dream come true!
